Axe Design Process

Old Design

User testing feedback:

Axe

  • Design too simplistic
  • Looks like every basic axe
  • Looks worse than main weapon – why get this?
  • Very small and short – want an axe with more presence

Inspirations

I took inspiration mainly for how the axe head should look like (from medieval kind of axes) - and combined them together to form a unique looking axe.

Axe Design Process

AxeDesignProcess

  1. Attempt to expand on old design
  2. Complete redesign & new outline
  3. Basic fill
  4. Added colour and pixel detail to handle and overall axe
  5. Added black outline to adhere to design guidelines
  6. Tilted design - users preferred tilted over straight in finished product

Key improvements

  • New axe design has a much more aesthetically pleasing design
  • New axe is much longer than previous one – matching well with main character
  • Three users reported really liking the colour scheme, especially the red colour touches on the edges
  • Users additionally preferred the new handle – added a more interesting design compared to a simple straight handle
  • Overall design improvement compared to main weapon – 5/5 users preferred this axe over current main weapon
