Task Team WIGOS Metadata (TT-WIGOSMD-26)

25 Aug 2022, 12:00-13:30 UTC; online

Agenda & Notes

  • Welcome, adoption of minutes (5', jkl)
    • Discussion about how to follow up with CEOS presentation from last week. (Joerg) definitely sees value in collaborating on the project (Lara) Their work is very early and it's difficult to collaborate at this point. It could be helpful to map to something they have when it's more mature and then determine how to follow up. (Joerg) wouldn't it make sense to have this team work on development at the same time? (Lara) yes, but it's not clear what their outcome/purpose is. (Joerg) they are stakeholders of WIGOS and WMO and they should be included in this team (Gao) our involvement can help reduce the number of standards in use vs the risk of yet another standard being created. (Joerg) at a minimum, we'll stay in contact.
    • Welcome to Yuanhe!
  • Secretariat updates (5', AM)
    • reminder: next amendments for FT2023-1 need to be complete by mid-December
    • schedule bi-monthly meetings (one for fast-track amendments and another for WIGOS standard, KPIs and other business)
    • Team will meet on the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month on Thursdays 12-13:30UTC. (Joerg) there are a lot of Thursdays that I won't be available, a deputy would be helpful? will determine at the previous meetings if needed.
  • Requirements for versioning in the codes registry (https://github.com/wmo-im/wmds/issues/383)
    • all are invited to comment and provide examples of vocabulary servers that have versioning.
  • FT2022-2 feedback issue #420 (10', AM)
    • (Joerg) options for merging all 1-01-* tables. Should we have a new GitHub repo? or a new folder? i-adopt is very useful for the observable properties (Gao) we definitely need a sandbox. We may need to determine what is allowed or not allowed and this may vary depending on the domain. (Joerg) also there is the fundamental concern in Steve's email about the definitions for Terrestrial and Hydrology. (Anna) create a branch and a new CSV with all 1-01* tables merged into one, with two columns. (Joerg) there will be a need to maintain the old codes from "some time" and therefore should have an index too. Current version and new version will need to co-exist.
    • ACTION: Anna will create a sandbox area in a fork, branch, repo to start this effort.
    • ACTION: Anna add hydrological to names of the terrestrial tables in fast-track branch.
  • KPIs Presentation (30', Juan) -KPIs WMDR - Aug 2022.pdf
    • (Joerg) how many records did you download from OSCAR? (Juan) ~8,000 (Joerg) try again, a bug was fixed and there should be 40,000 to 45,000 records.
    • (Lara) it would be nice if can get some people to test with records that they provide to check the KPIs
    • (Joerg) it would be good to get this integrated in OSCAR. WDQMS does something similar by assessing stations and people are paying attention to it. (Lara) more testing could help us figure out the best way to determining a beneficial grading/weighting approaches. (Joerg) will talk with metadata providers at MeteoSwiss.(Juan)..? (Joerg) it would be interesting to see if the results can be grouped by country, there might be some interesting patterns. (Gao) it would also be interesting to see if there are improvements over time. (Joerg) There's no historic information available from OSCAR, but some analysis can group by station dates. (Gao)
    • (Anna) we should clean up some of the outstanding issues with some of the KPIs before broader testing. (Joerg) this will take time and won't have time for the next month (Anna) why do we have KPIs that are associated with OSCAR? we should not be testing things that are outside of the metadata record (Lara) one example one of the KPIs is for images that can only be associated in OSCAR/Surface and it does not exist in the metadata record. (Joerg) this is deficiency of the representation and it should not be dropped entirely.
  • reminder: Contribution of TT-WIGOS to upcoming meetings and conferences
    • Joerg presenting on evolution of WMDR
    • Will see if they are accepted
  • AOB
