Do I need internet connection for it work?

Yes, you do need internet to get the satellite data. But the satellite radio data does not need an internet connection to receive data. we will try to reduce the dependence on internet connection in the future.

If I want to start building this myself, what do I need to start?

"Rome was not built in a day", we strongly advice you to start with the basics of C++ and Qt, learn a little of electronics, mechanical and antenna theory before diving heads in. checkout the requirements of each section of the wiki for more information of the requirements.

Is there a binary app of this application I can just download and use instead of installing all the dependencies and building the software myself?

We are hard at work at the moment trying to build an AppImage for the use by the community. Stay tuned for when it comes finally.
