Problem:

Many athletic individuals wish to play casual, impromptu games of sports and currently find it difficult to either co-ordinate these games or find fields to which they can play on. A current scenario would entail people going to their local sporting arena and attempting to coordinate a game with their mates through the use of messaging apps. Whether they actually get to play on these fields is entirely based on luck as it might potentially be occupied by another group of people at that time or any other myriad of complication that may arise with turning up to a field unannounced and uninformed. Thus, this forms the basis the project, a sports finding platform which allows users to find fields and co-ordinate casual sporting accordingly.

Solution:

The project aims to create a platform the provides users the information they require to better organise pickup sporting events. By giving users information about pickup events being organised in their area, they are able to coordinate according to their relevant needs. This takes a lot of the guessing work out of the current pickup sporting scene and provides a new fundamental way to coordinate impromptu games.

What we aim to do differently, yet similarly to apps like PlayWith and Sporty is to take the best parts of both and create the best possible sport event finding platform in the Australian market. Both of these apps are currently only based in the US and so we aim to bridge the gap between these two apps and apply them in to an unsaturated market. We have applied and tinkered with the event scheduling concept from PlayWith to support our demographic and then took inspiration from the geolocation and social concepts in Sporty. Neither of these apps focus on the locations themselves and do not provide a system that allow user inputed information and reviews, so we aim to incorporate this into our concept. It does open up the potential for user exploit, however, we aim to counter this by having an curation system that will sort out the flawed/incorrect information to verify what is being provided.

List of User Requirements:

Below is a list of functions that the app requires as gathered by user research:

  • Geolocation based information (map of all arenas, similar courts in area, etc...)
  • Win/Loss system as the foundation of the apps meta-game (provides replay-ability, a reason to come back to the app)
  • Social system (friends list, invite friends, etc...)
  • Event creation system (allows users to create and join events based on geolocation)
  • King of the Court System (extension of win/loss system, based off of Pokemon GO, provides a reason to come back to the app)
