Random 60 FPS locks and or stutters during gameplay

If you have monitor that supports high refresh rates (120Hz, 144Hz, etc), Freelancer should run just fine at your native refresh rate by default. However, you may experience completely random locks to 60 FPS or lower during gameplay, which is an issue that is present in vanilla Freelancer as well. This guide will show you how to fix it.
- Download the latest version of Guru3D RTSS RivaTuner Statistics Server: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download.html
- Install the program.
- After the program has finished installing, run it and add a new profile.
- It'll ask you to select an executable. Pick the one from Freelancer: HD Edition; by default it's located in
AppData/Local/Freelancer HD Edition/EXE/Freelancer.exe
. - Select the profile you've just created and change the
Framerate limit
to your monitor's refresh rate.- To find your monitor's refresh rate on Windows 10: go to Settings -> System -> Display -> Advanced display settings -> Refresh rate (Hz)
- If your monitor has G-Sync or FreeSync enabled, you may want to lower the amount by around 3-5 to ensure the framerate will always remain in the sync range
- Make sure the option
Start with Windows
is enabled underGeneral properties
on the top left.
Freelancer: HD Edition should now always run at a high framerate and never dip to 60 FPS. N.B. If you exit the program, the new framerate lock will no longer work! Make sure you minimize the application rather than closing it.
Also, DO NOT set the Application detection level
to Medium
or High
. This can cause issues in Freelancer specifically. Therefore, you should keep it at Low
.
