Core functions
These are the functions that so far have been identified as essential to the project.
-
Marking tools. Two tools will be available: one for marking text and one for marking anything that doesn't belong to the main body of text, e.g. marginalia, drawings/images, booksellers/library marks.
-
Text marking tool: after some testing, single dot and underlying line are good options.
-
Hypertext marking tool: drawing a box around hypertextual elements is a good option. Although for marginalia we want the ability to transcribe as well as marking the area as separate from the main body.
-
On selecting the hypertext tool, the user will be able to select the appropriate element, e.g. 'pointing hand'. This will trigger the appropriate workflow, e.g. if pointing hand, draw a box and add keyword(s) and don't transcribe.
-
Transcription dialog. Very much like annoTate's. Includes: TEI tags (insertion, deletion, illegible, unsure, foreign language?), discard/save buttons.
-
Cheat sheet. It reproduces all the main abbreviations on a keyboard-style arrangement. Abbreviations are sorted from more to less common. Photographic examples are shown on hovering over each abbreviation. On clicking on an abbreviation, the corresponding text is sent to input box of the transcription dialog. If the transcription dialog is not open the clicking should be disabled.
-
Whole subject thumbnail. This helps the user to keep track of the context. It shows the whole subject and the area the user is currently zooming into is highlighted.
