Permissions decide which users have access rights to a file system. Permissions thus work a bit like a lock preventing unwanted users from accessing and/or modifying files.
Unix systems have three different types of permissions: a) The read permission which grants a user the ability to read a file; b) The write permission which grants a user the ability to modify a file; c) the execute permission which grants a user the ability to execute a file.
