# Resources for Georeferencing
Do you have physical or historical maps as part of your project? If you're planning on using them in any way other than as decorative/informative archival images, you'll want to look into georeferencing them.

Most often, georeferencing is done in a geographic information system (GIS) such as QGIS or ArcGIS. Koerner Library Research Commons offers a workshop on [Georeferencing with QGIS](https://ubc-library-rc.github.io/gis-georeferencing/). You can follow this workshop asynchronously to georeference your historical map. See also the QGIS offical [lesson on georeferencing](https://docs.qgis.org/3.28/en/docs/training_manual/forestry/map_georeferencing.html), or [UMass Amherst's workshop](https://umass-gis.github.io/workshops/content/georeferencing/). If you are more comfortable with ArcGIS, see their official [overview](https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/data/imagery/overview-of-georeferencing.htm) and [documentation](https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/data/imagery/georeferencing-a-raster-to-a-referenced-layer.htm). While the interface this demo uses is very old, [pbcgis](https://www.pbcgis.com/georeferencing/) has some good tips for georeferencing with ArcGIS.
