- Broad overview of bio-logging -- note that the data our tools deal with is mainly from acclerometers, magnetometers, depth sensors, although the paper talks about many others
- Johnson & Tyack 2003, "A digital acoustic recording tag for measuring the response of wild animals to sound" A description of the first DTAG (the tag type for which these tools were originally designed).
- Gleiss et al. 2011, "Making overall dynamic body acceleration work: on the theory of acceleration as a proxy for energy expenditure" More about acceleration-based metrics.
- Simon et al. 2012, "Keeping momentum with a mouthful of water: behavior and kinematics of humpback whale lunge feeding" Using data from tags to study whale feeding behavior (a different way of using acceleration data).
- Miller et al. 2004, Sperm whale behaviour indicates the use of echolocation click buzzes ‘creaks’ in prey capture Using tag data to assess whale underwater behavior and better understand how sperm whales hunt.
- There is a relatively new journal that focuses on tag data called Animal Biotelemetry. It may be worth some exploration. Not all the articles in this journal are directly relevant to TagTools, since we focus on tag types that record movement data at high resolution (many times per second). So, for example, papers using data from GPS position-only tags would not be compatible with our TagTools. But there are many interesting papers there.
- I encourage you to do further literature searches on topics that interest you and add to this list if you find papers that are especially useful. You may also be interested in some of the references cited in the project proposal (see below).
