Required, recommended and optional metadata elements used for annotation
Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Home Page
Dublin Core RDF (DC-RDF) document
These elements are required, recommended, or optional for ontologies developed by the SSIII community.
rdf:type: http://www.w3.org/2002/07/owl#Ontology - to indicate that it is an OWL ontology
dc:identifier: A unique identifier given to the ontology
dc:title: A name given to the ontology.
dc:description: Description of the ontology.
owl:versionInfo: The annotation property that provides version information for an ontology or another OWL construct.
skos:historyNote: A log of changes made to the ontology over time
dc:creator: An entity primarily responsible for making the resource. For Version 2, this is some subset of the SSIII Project Team.
dc:rights: Information about rights held in and over the resource. We agreed to use the CC0 version of the PIC badge, translating the rights information from RDF to OWL and the html to text.
dc:source: The described resource may be derived from the related resource in whole or in part. Recommended best practice is to identify the related resource by means of a string conforming to a formal identification system. (Class Level).
dc:date: A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource.
dc:language: A language of the resource.
dc:subject: The topic of the resource. We will use the NCAR version of GCMD keywords for now.
dc:publisher: An entity responsible for making the resource available. We will use NSIDC for everything that isn't a pure WMO ontology (at least up through v2 of the ontologies).
For each version of an ontology, a versioning narrative will be added as an rdfs:comment in the form of a change log. Detailed versioning information will be captured at the ontology level using owl versioning constructs.
Major, minor, and patch versioning will be established using semantic versions (see semver.org).
Minor version: Significant collection of individual changes deemed important enough to replace the current release. For example, adding new information (classes, properties), significant changes to annotation, or other useful features.
Major version: Major changes to the entire ontology, changes that have an impact on the inference model. We can establish a version URI/IRI to specific version tag in gitHub. Create a versioned w3id.org identifier that will point to the git repository for a particular tag. Come up with a current version tag for current distribution but does not include latest, work version.
owl:priorVersion
owl:deprecated
rdfs:comment: An account of the resource. An instance of rdf:Property that may be used to provide a human-readable description of a resource.
rdfs:label: an instance of rdf:Property that may be used to provide a human-readable version of a resource's name.
Source: The described resource may be derived from the related resource in whole or in part. Recommended best practice is to identify the related resource by means of a string conforming to a formal identification system. (Class Level)
