This repository preserves the Fluid R3 soundfont by Frank Wen as it was shipped by Debian/Ubuntu and Gentoo Linux.
There exist updated versions from MuseScore but these,
I believe, are the originals that have been extracted from Gentoo's
fluid-soundfont_3.1.tar.gz and verified via checksumming to be identical to the
fluid-soundfont_3.1.orig.tar.gz ,
provided by the Debian project
and recorded by Toby Smithe of Ubuntu
as originating from http://www.musescore.org/download/fluid-soundfont.tar.gz on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 00:08:09 +0000.
Unfortunately GitHub does not support files over 100 MiB in size, and the Large File Storage has a meager 1 GiB bandwidth limit. The only way for this to be available to a large number of people, if it gets accepted as a valid source of the original Fluid R3 soundfont, is a bit of trickery that I learned about while investigating Debian packaging - we shoehorn the data into FLAC:
flac --endian=little --channels=1 --bps=16 --sample-rate=44100 --sign=signed FluidR3_GM.sf2 -o FluidR3_GM.sf2.flacy
All one needs to undo it is to decompress it with the flac tool, taking care to force use of raw output (since the original data wasn't uncompressed audio):
flac --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed -d FluidR3_GM.sf2.flacy -o FluidR3_GM.sf2
