I might be out of the loop but what about absolute paths here? Or [[++some_setting]]to/file.tpl? Is this edit suggesting not to do that?

It's never supported absolute paths unless you set element_static_path to an empty string. Tags are allowed in the relative path or in that setting, but I wasn't sure we wanted to advertise that. If we do though, I can try and come up with an example use case that doesn't seem too contrived.

Isn't that how GPM creates static elements (locally, not when packaged)?

GPM1 uses the following for Chunks:

[[++{extra_namespace}.core_path]]elements/chunks/{chunk_filename}

The value of the extra_namespace.core_path system setting is an absolute path and it works with 'none' in the media source.
