As part of the upgrade, fix one compilation error that requires TS 3.7 by an interface merging workaround. Resolves mike-north#314

As part of the upgrade, fix one compilation error that requires TS 3.7 by an interface merging workaround.
(I believe this should be a backwards-compatible change: all existing tests and type-checking still pass!)
