About

While investigating woes with the eCompass at GH-27, we discovered that there are two different developer manuals.

While we used the second one until now, the product page now links to the first one.

Differences

The most prominent differences are that the Developer manual 1.8 outlines the eCompass calibration procedure, while the Developer manual 1.0 does not.

eCompass Calibration Characteristic: Read/Write
UUID: 0xA008
  0x01->Calibration Mode
  0x00-> Normal mode
Instructions:
1step -> Activate Clinometer and eCompass (UUID: 0xA003)
2step -> Put in calibration Mode send 0x01
3step -> Rotate the device 360 degrees as slow as possible, repeat
4step -> Save data in flash memory, send 0x00 (Normal mode)

Also, while the Developer manual 1.8 still shows a wide range of supported sensors...

the Developer manual 1.0 now shows only a very narrow table. The column names are a bit unreadable on the image, but they actually are "Wind Speed", "Wind Direction", "Battery level".

The current ULTRASONIC PORTABLE SPECS SHEET Version 1.3 does not tell anything about an electronic compass. The FAQ has some more details:

This product is a wind sensor instrument and it has been engineered for the sole use of accurately measure wind speed and direction using ultrasonic transducers. The product includes some secondary sensors in addition, such as thermometer, compass, gyroscope and accelerometer. These secondary sensors are not meant to be used. Sensor are also useful for developers and professionals. For instance, having a temperature reading does not turn the wind instrument into a sun-shielded scienti-precision compass, etc... These secondary sensors are not calibrated and should not be used.

On the quest for the eCompass (GH-27) I've also discovered an older Ultrasonic_Portable_User_Manual_EN.pdf, called ULTRASONIC Portable WIND INSTRUMENT AND DATA LOGGER User manual (English version 1.6, 01.02.2019).

3.5. Sensors

  • Ultrasonic transducers (4x)
  • Sample rate: 1, 4, 8 Hz
  • Thermometer
  • Compass
  • Gyroscope
  • Accelerometer

Ultrasonic Portable combine different types of sensors which allows you to get information according to your needs.

Ultrasonic transducers (4x)

The Ultrasonic Portable has been designed to avoid any mechanical parts to maximize reliability and minimize maintenance.

The transducers communicate between themselves two by two using ultrasonic range waves. Each couple of transductors calculate the signal delay and get information about both, wind direction and wind speed.

Sample rate: 1, 4, 8 Hz

Sample rate con choosen through the application the range of data you want to extract. If the battery level is not up to 20%, you can only get information at 1Hz.

Thermometer

Temperature data con be got using our App.

Compass

North position can be got through the needle that appears in Anemotracker App.
