JSX AutoDocs

This project is inspired by Prettify TypeScript, particularly the TypeScript Type Tree Generator from prettify-ts.

What this do

From a simple component like this:

type ExternalType = {
  requiredProperty: string
  optionalProperty?: string
  requiredObjectInternal: {
    requiredProperty: string
    optionalProperty?: string
  }
}

type MyComponentProps = {
  children: ReactNode | (({ view }: { view: string }) => ReactNode)
  requiredString: string
  requiredNumber: number
  optionalString?: string
  optionalNumber?: number
  requiredFunction: () => void
  optionalFunction?: () => void
  requiredPromise: () => Promise<any>
  optionalPromise?: () => Promise<any>
  requiredArray: ExternalType[]
  optionalArray?: ExternalType[]
  requiredObject: ExternalType
  optionalObject?: ExternalType
}

function MyComponent(props: MyComponentProps) {
  return <div>Hello, jsxAutoDocs</div>
}

export { MyComponent }

Is generated an object like this:

{
  name: 'MyComponent',
  exportType: 'named', // or 'default'
  props: { // these are all the props except 'children'
    requiredString: '',
    requiredNumber: 0,
    optionalString: '',
    optionalNumber: 0,
    requiredFunction: '() => {}',
    optionalFunction: '() => {}',
    requiredPromise: '() => {}',
    optionalPromise: '() => {}',
    requiredArray: [
      {
        requiredProperty: '',
        optionalProperty: '',
        requiredObjectInternal: { requiredProperty: '', optionalProperty: '' }
      }
    ],
    optionalArray: [
      {
        requiredProperty: '',
        optionalProperty: '',
        requiredObjectInternal: { requiredProperty: '', optionalProperty: '' }
      }
    ],
    requiredObject: {
      requiredProperty: '',
      optionalProperty: '',
      requiredObjectInternal: { requiredProperty: '', optionalProperty: '' }
    },
    optionalObject: {
      requiredProperty: '',
      optionalProperty: '',
      requiredObjectInternal: ''
    }
  },
  required: { // these are only the required props except 'children'
    requiredString: '',
    requiredNumber: 0,
    requiredFunction: '() => {}',
    requiredPromise: '() => {}',
    requiredArray: [
      {
        requiredProperty: '',
        requiredObjectInternal: { requiredProperty: '' }
      }
    ],
    requiredObject: {
      requiredProperty: '',
      requiredObjectInternal: { requiredProperty: '' }
    }
  }
}

And this object is turned into this one:

{
  component: 'MyComponent',
  import: "import { MyComponent } from 'jsx-autodocs'",
  minimal: '<MyComponent\n' +
    '  requiredString=""\n' +
    '  requiredNumber={0}\n' +
    '  requiredFunction={() => {}}\n' +
    '  requiredPromise={() => {}}\n' +
    '  requiredArray={[\n' +
    '    {\n' +
    '      requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '      requiredObjectInternal: {\n' +
    '        requiredProperty: ""\n' +
    '      }\n' +
    '    }\n' +
    '  ]}\n' +
    '  requiredObject={{\n' +
    '    requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '    requiredObjectInternal: {\n' +
    '      requiredProperty: ""\n' +
    '    }\n' +
    '  }}\n' +
    '/>',
  complete: '<MyComponent\n' +
    '  requiredString=""\n' +
    '  requiredNumber={0}\n' +
    '  optionalString=""\n' +
    '  optionalNumber={0}\n' +
    '  requiredFunction={() => {}}\n' +
    '  optionalFunction={() => {}}\n' +
    '  requiredPromise={() => {}}\n' +
    '  optionalPromise={() => {}}\n' +
    '  requiredArray={[\n' +
    '    {\n' +
    '      requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '      optionalProperty: "",\n' +
    '      requiredObjectInternal: {\n' +
    '        requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '        optionalProperty: ""\n' +
    '      }\n' +
    '    }\n' +
    '  ]}\n' +
    '  optionalArray={[\n' +
    '    {\n' +
    '      requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '      optionalProperty: "",\n' +
    '      requiredObjectInternal: {\n' +
    '        requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '        optionalProperty: ""\n' +
    '      }\n' +
    '    }\n' +
    '  ]}\n' +
    '  requiredObject={{\n' +
    '    requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '    optionalProperty: "",\n' +
    '    requiredObjectInternal: {\n' +
    '      requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '      optionalProperty: ""\n' +
    '    }\n' +
    '  }}\n' +
    '  optionalObject={{\n' +
    '    requiredProperty: "",\n' +
    '    optionalProperty: "",\n' +
    '    requiredObjectInternal: ""\n' +
    '  }}\n' +
    '/>'
}

And then you can just represent your component in your docs with a valid JSX signature like this:

Minimal

Only required props

<MyComponent
  requiredString=""
  requiredNumber={0}
  requiredFunction={() => {}}
  requiredPromise={() => {}}
  requiredArray={[
    {
      requiredProperty: "",
      requiredObjectInternal: {
        requiredProperty: ""
      }
    }
  ]}
  requiredObject={{
    requiredProperty: "",
    requiredObjectInternal: {
      requiredProperty: ""
    }
  }}
/>

Complete

All props

<MyComponent
  requiredString=""
  requiredNumber={0}
  optionalString=""
  optionalNumber={0}
  requiredFunction={() => {}}
  optionalFunction={() => {}}
  requiredPromise={() => {}}
  optionalPromise={() => {}}
  requiredArray={[
    {
      requiredProperty: "",
      optionalProperty: "",
      requiredObjectInternal: {
        requiredProperty: "",
        optionalProperty: ""
      }
    }
  ]}
  optionalArray={[
    {
      requiredProperty: "",
      optionalProperty: "",
      requiredObjectInternal: {
        requiredProperty: "",
        optionalProperty: ""
      }
    }
  ]}
  requiredObject={{
    requiredProperty: "",
    optionalProperty: "",
    requiredObjectInternal: {
      requiredProperty: "",
      optionalProperty: ""
    }
  }}
  optionalObject={{
    requiredProperty: "",
    optionalProperty: "",
    requiredObjectInternal: ""
  }}
/>

How to use it

npm i -sD jsx-autodocs

Exposed methods

To generate both the minimal and complete JSX versions of your component’s documentation, use the generateDocs method.

import { generateDocs } from 'jsx-autodocs'

const jsxFromPath = await generateDocs({
  path: './src/components/MyComponent.tsx', // only tsx files are accepted
  packageName: 'my-ui-library',
  indentLevel: 2,
  maxDepth: 100
  maxProperties: 100
  maxSubProperties: 100
  maxUnionMembers: 100
})

const jsxFromCode = await generateDocs({
  source: '' // the pure typescript code extracted from your tsx component
  program: {} // the typescript program instance
  packageName: 'my-ui-library',
  indentLevel: 2,
  maxDepth: 100
  maxProperties: 100
  maxSubProperties: 100
  maxUnionMembers: 100
})

If you only need to retrieve the descriptor object of your component, you can do so in two ways: either by providing the file path or by using the source code directly (like the Vite Plugin).

import { analyzeComponentFromPath, analyzeComponentFromCode } from 'jsx-autodocs'

const componentDescriptorFromPath = await analyzeComponentFromPath(filePath, options)
const componentDescriptorFromCode = await analyzeComponentFromCode(code, program, options)

If for any reason you already have the component descriptor or have built it yourself, you can use the generateJSX method.

import { generateJSX } from 'jsx-autodocs'

const jsx = generateJSX(component, importPackageName, indentLevel)

If you already have the necessary information from the file and need a deep type analysis, simply invoke the method getTypeInfoAtPosition.

import { getTypeInfoAtPosition } from 'jsx-autodocs'

const deepTypeAnaliysis = getTypeInfoAtPosition(typescriptContext, typeChecker, sourceFile, position, options)

Vite Plugin

Example using it in Storybook

import { jsxAutoDocsVite } from 'jsx-autodocs'

const config: StorybookConfig = {
  // your Storybook config
  viteFinal: async (config) => {
    config.plugins?.push(
      jsxAutoDocsVite({
        packageName: 'my-ui-library', // is the only required property
        indentLevel: 2,
        cacheSize: 1000,
        debug: false,
        tsconfigPath: './tsconfig.json',
        maxDepth: 100,
        maxProperties: 100,
        maxSubProperties: 100,
        maxUnionMembers: 100,
      })
    )
    return config
  }
}

And then in your docs page you can retrieve the information easily

import { findJSXAutoDocs } from 'jsx-autodocs'

const jsx = findJSXAutoDocs('MyComponent')

Enjoy and make beautiful automated docs from your components 😊
