The bug we are encountering on windows seems to be known:

• https://gitlab.kitware.com/cmake/cmake/-/issues/24561
• [libunwind] build error for x86_64-windows-gnu target llvm/llvm-project#96418

though so far not tracked down. I reproduced this setup on our Windows machine and the build log for checking the flag says:

so it would appear the try-compile attempts to link against some Windows stuff and it doesn't find that for whatever reason. Back to linker hell.
