Website full of subtitles: subscene

SRT file format info

So, lets get a quick rundown of what this project is about: Deaf people have very limited options when viewing movies at the cinemas. We want to solve this problem with technology. A brainstorm session at HacksForHumanity on the 16th June opened the forum to a whole host of ideas.

It is generally accepted that the solution will be a phone app. The user will have the subtitles play on the phone. There is currently a prototype that is working towards this solution (This github project).

A user will:

  1. go to a movie
  2. search for a subtitle
  3. sync the subtitle playback with the movie
  4. watch the movie with the subtitle playing on the phone

Step 3 seems to be the juiciest problem. At this point however, opinions vary as to what the best solution might be. Two approaches seem possible:

  1. Provide a UI that makes the syncing easy and painless
  2. Use the environmental audio/visual info in the cinema to automatically sync the subtitles.

Note that the final solution may very well be a combination of these two approaches. At this point in time, I think we have enough resources to pursue both of these ideas in parallel.
