WIP. still debugging with the iox branch.
I purposely do not yet have the reverted commits for the DF hang bug, since there was a bunch of followup PRs (commits in DF 45.0.0) and it was getting messy to revert. Since we have the reproducer in iox, I can (1) see if the iox test case still fails without all the various other changes -- then (2) make the minimum change to this patched DF branch (e.g. use the old method) to avoid the spinning bug.
