We moved to Malaysia in January 2017. My wife and I always had this dream of living in a foreign country for a few years. So when she could get a job as an assistant professor at a Malaysian university we didn't have to think twice about it. We moved with our kids, then 5 months and 4 years old.

In an unexpected way moving to Malaysia opened up the opportunity to make a career switch. I wasn't spending as much time on Mindbus anymore (and it thrived, so I am not sure what that says about my involvement) and the cost of living was such that I could afford to do a full-time PhD at the National University of Malaysia. So that's what I am doing now: A PhD in computer science. My research is on privacy in the context of second layer cryptocurrency solutions.

In December 2022 we moved back to The Netherlands.

---

I am on the home stretch of my PhD now. My last article is in preprint and about to be submitted. I am currently working on my thesis. I have set myself the deadline of October for submitting it.
I just finished my Viva and can now call myself Doctor of Philosophy.

The Netherlands is really feeling like home again. It has taken the bigger part of 2023 to adjust to it. I didn't see that coming. I thought that the country you'd lived in for pretty much all your life would feel right like home again after a stint of 6 years in another country, but it didn't.
I also just started at Lightning Labs. I'm doing a project, working on their new product called Taproot Assets. I am really enjoying the work so far. It is such a pleasure to work on something that actually is in production on mainnet. Doing security on something tangible is a different game entirely.

I just did a half marathon. My first! Finished in just over two hours. I should have trained more in preparation. Still I enjoyed it, and I'm continuing the training regime. Next half marathon is already on the calendar in November.
Looking forward to the spring. Daylight is getting better already. We survived yet another dark winter.

I'm actively looking for a job in the web3/applied cryptography/cryptocurrency scene. I had a short gig at Heliax that ran for three months and it taught me that this is the discipline where I want to spent more time professionally.
