Taunus – Your access to your disk… Via HTTP… For free!

This is Taunus! Taunus is supposed to be a small application working on top of Pyramid[fn:1], granting you access on your file system via HTTP in order to make file sharing in LANs a bit easier and to learn a bit more about the Pyramid framework (one could also say that the latter is the main goal).

Current supported features

Alright, so currently you have the possibility to surf around in your file system. Currently there is only the listing of all the files in the directory available and a nice navigation bar is shown. Things that will come soon is surely to show the size of the files and show symbols depending on what one is able to do with these files.

I just did some minor changes that were mainly clean up stuff. I think it’s better to concentrate first on a clean directory listing and later on start to focus on doing things with all the different files.

Features that will come in The Future[tm]

Well this morning, while lying around in my bed, I thought about the things that this application should do. As always this one is supposed to be the killer app that blows off your head because it is so awesome! So read this carefully!

The main goal is to be able to view the file hierarchy via a web browser. Choosing a root directory will be crucial for this application! You cannot start this application without giving it a root directory (all hail security!).

The user on the other end at the browser can browse (who would have thought it!) through all the file system hierarchy parting from that root directory. But, he won’t be able to get out of it, unless you grant it via a configuration option. In the first case symbolic links simply won’t show up, in the latter they will.

When the user browses to a file that is not a directory different actions will happen, depending on the type of the file:

videos
there should appear a nice interface to be able to watch this video (using HTML5 kicks as, ey?).
html
choose between listing the file, to view the file in browser or to download it
text
list the file

That’s it, I haven’t thought about more file types, yet.

To implement all this stuff is the primary goal. Later on there will also be authorisation and a root directory that can be chosen on a per user base.
