What’s Missing in the Ecosystem?

We have come a long way toward being able to liberate ourselves from proprietary, closed systems. But many elements remain either missing or far too difficult to use. Two examples: 1) Security experts say it’s essential to move toward ubiquitous “end-to-end” encryption, preventing surveillance from malevolent hackers and abusers of state power. 2) The world of Big Data -- vast sets of data created in everyday life by digital technologies including sensors -- is largely owned and controlled by corporations; we need publicly created, and open, data sets. In this chapter we discuss how we can fill in these crucial gaps.
