Quarantine vs. isolation

Exposure recommendations

Quarantine means staying home after an exposure but before symptoms start. Quarantine is no longer recommended as a strategy for controlling COVID-19.

If you were exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19, but have no symptoms, and you are at higher risk for severe COVID-19, test within 5 days. If you are in contact with someone who is at higher risk, test before contact with them and wear a mask around them indoors for 10 days. If you had a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the last 30 days, you do not need to test unless symptoms start.

Isolation means staying home and away from others in your household if you have symptoms or you test positive. If you test positive, contact your doctor to see if you should receive treatment. COVID-19 treatments are free, widely available, and reduce the risk of serious illness. Learn about your treatment options.

Calculate your isolation period

If you test positive, use this calculator to determine how long you should isolate. This helps keep others safe.

Anyone with new symptoms of COVID-19, whether there is a known exposure or not, should mask and test right away.

Exposure and isolation guidelines

If you were exposed but have no symptoms

Isolation recommendations

Regardless of your vaccination status:

If you tested positive and have symptoms

Get tested immediately and 3-5 days after last exposure*

Wear a mask when around others for 10 days after exposure, even at home if other people are present

If you test positive, isolate

Follow the steps below, even if you are vaccinated or were previously infected with COVID-19.

*If you had COVID-19 within the last 30 days:

Isolate (stay home) and stay away from others in your household who are not infected. Sleep and stay in a separate room in your home from those not infected.

Wear a mask when you are around others indoors, even at home, for 10 days*. Read more in When and Why to Wear a Mask.

Avoid contact with those who are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 for 10 days*.

Speak with a healthcare provider about getting treatment as soon as possible. COVID-19 treatment works best if started within 5-7 days from feeling symptoms.

You don’t need to test after exposure unless symptoms start

If symptoms start, isolate and get tested

Ending isolation after testing positive with symptoms

If you test positive, whether you have symptoms or not

Isolate (stay home) until you have had no fever for 24 hours, without taking fever-reducing medication, AND your other symptoms are mild and improving.

Wear a mask for the full 10 days*, even if you end isolation earlier (or until you have two sequential negative tests at least one day apart).

Avoid contact with those who are at higher-risk for severe COVID-19 for 10 days*.

Regardless of your vaccination status or infection history:

If you tested positive and do NOT have symptoms

Isolate for at least 5 days

Sleep and stay in a separate room from those not infected

Use a separate bathroom if you can

Wear a mask around others, even at home

You can end isolation early, after Day 5, if:

You have no fever for 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medication, AND

Your other symptoms are gone or improving

If you still have a fever, continue to isolate until the fever is gone for at least 24 hours

If other symptoms are not improving, continue to isolate through Day 10

After you end isolation:

Wear a mask around others for 10 full days after start of symptoms. If you had no symptoms, wear a mask for 10 full days after your positive test.

You may remove your mask sooner than Day 10 if you have two negative tests in a row, at least one day apart.

Wear a mask when you are around others indoors, even at home, for 10 days*.

Avoid contact with those who are at higher-risk for severe COVID-19 for 10 days*.

If you develop fever or other COVID-19 symptoms, follow the isolation recommendations above.

For children who test positive:

*The potential infectious period is 2 days before the date of symptoms began or the positive test date (if no symptoms) through Day 10. (Day 0 is the symptom onset date or positive test date).

Children under 2 years can end isolation after Day 5

Children 2 years and older should follow the steps above for ending isolation
