According to the release schedule, the next release should be major 53.0.0 (including API changes) released early September 2024

Per discussion on #6050 we are going to make a 53.0.0-dev feature branch so we can merge / integrate breaking API changes before master opens for 53.0.0.

I have a fix and I will make an RC2 today if no one beats me to it
