+Adapt It Mobile can also help you collect lexical data that can be used to create a dictionary. You can also import lexical data into Adapt It Mobile's translation memory.
+
+## Create and export lexical data
+
+As you translate words and phrases into the target language, Adapt It Mobile stores the translations in a translation memory (called a Knowledge Base). Once several books have been translated, this translation memory can contain valuable lexical data that can be exported into tools such as [SIL FieldWorks Language Explorer](https://software.sil.org/fieldworks/) and used as the basis for a dictionary in the target language.

+## Import lexical data
+
+If your translation team already has lexical data, for example from a [Rapid Word Collection](https://rapidwords.net/) workshop, you can export the collected data to a LIFT format file and then import the file into Adapt It Mobile. The translation memory (Knowledge Base) will then be pre-filled with entries that can be used to translate literacy materials, Scriptures, etc.

+In addition to creating translation drafts, Adapt It Mobile can also help you create _glosses_ and _free translations_, to help you verify the accuracy of your translations.
+
+## Gloss editor
+
+With Adapt It Mobile's Gloss editor, you can:
+
+- Create word by word or phrase by phrase linguistic glosses of the source text for linguistic research and documentation.
+- Create a literal interlinear gloss, a back translation or a free translation of the source text in a third language (usually a regional, trade, or international language).
+
+The glossing editor mode is similar to the adaptation editor mode. The text is laid out with the source text just above the corresponding target text, and the corresponding gloss text just below the target text. As with the adaptation mode editor, Adapt It Mobile maintains a knowledge base (translation memory) of previously entered glosses. These glosses are automatically inserted when the source word is encountered again.

+### Free translation editor
+
+Adapt It Mobile also supports the creation of an idiomatic translation of the adapted target text, called a _free translation_.
+
+Free translations are usually created later in the translation cycle to verify a translation’s accuracy. Using both a free translation and a more literal gloss / back translation (a translation from the target language back to the original text), a translation consultant can check the translation’s accuracy and identify areas that need improvement.

+Adapt It Mobile's primary purpose is to help you quickly and accurately produce draft translations of text, which can then be exported into your favorite tool for further revision and publication. It's able to do this through _adaptation_ and _translation memory_.

+## Adaptation
+
+_Adaptation_ is a special case of translation, where the source and target languages are related linguistically (Italian and Spanish, for example). When there is a high degree of similarity in structure - lexical, grammar, discourse, syntax, and morphology - the process of translating between the two languages is easier and can move faster.

+## Translation memory
+
+Adapt It Mobile stores the words and phrases you translate in a _translation memory_ on the mobile device. When that word or phrase appears next in the text, Adapt It Mobile "remembers" the previous translation and suggests it for you. You can either use the suggested text or create another as appropriate. If there are multiple translations for a word or phrase, Adapt It Mobile will display the translations in a drop-down menu - again, you can either select one of the previous translations or create a new one as appropriate.

+By using a translation memory, Adapt It Mobile speeds up the translation process **and** increases the translation's accuracy - because the previous spelling of the translation is remembered and suggested when the word or phrase appears in the text again.
