Jailbreaking an Apple iPad (running iOS 4.3.5)

Apple’s iOS operating system was designed to run software developed within the bounds of a limited system so as to provide an ecosystem of software that is dependable in processing and unified in usability. This disallows much access to core-level functions of any Apple Mobile Device, like low-level Bluetooth communication. To gain access to the other features of the devices and to install non-Apple-approved software, a modification called “jailbreaking” must be applied to the operating system on an Apple Mobile Device. This guide demonstrates how to accomplish a “jailbreak” on an Apple iPad (First Generation, Wi-Fi Only) running iOS 4.3.5.

  1. Download a copy of Apple iOS 4.3.4 for the device. This is located at the URL below.
  2. Download the jailbreaking utility, “Redsn0w” for your platform. This guide assumes you are using a computer running Mac OS X.
  3. Start Redsn0w and select the iOS 4.3.4 .ipsw file when you are to browse for your “CURRENT firmware,” even though this version is one behind of your current.
  4. Click next and select only “Install Cydia” on the options panel.
  5. Click next and follow the instructions in Redsn0w. Read them carefully, as they involve specifically-timed button presses throughout the process.

A drawback of the “jailbreaking” of iOS 4.3.5 in particular is that the device requires that you boot into “tethered mode” every time the device completely shuts down. To do this, you will need to follow the same instructions as above, substituting “Just boot tethered now” for “Install Cydia” in step 4.
