Sorry, I merged it before.
Let's discuss it here.

Original message from Ilya:
New design.
Currently, no colors. Let's focus on the structure first.
I believe this version is superior to what we have. I was surprised to see the previous version published.
I didn't paln to show it outside of the team; so let's publish the new one ASAP.
Please, tell me what you think and suggest color schemes.
In the mean time, I'm focused on supporting older browsers.
Let's try to publish it today.

I updated links.
And I updated wording to match (e.g. section had Learn & Share name but box title was Workshops)

Layout looks cooler now. I like when everything is at one page and easy to access.
Blue color was ok but we can keep colorless until we come up with a design.

This looks very good. I really like it without color better than blue.

Thank you very much @felizbear.

@kolyaak, I need your opinion.

  1. why we have a google form for lecture series if we suppose to announce them on the meetup page?
  2. Let's use workshops and lecture series as subtitles in the boxes, as they are more understandable then learn & share and step up
    And in the about section we can use learn & share and step up.
    What do you think?

@kolyaak

kolyaak commented Jan 1, 2015

@felizbear

  1. let's disable it for now.
  2. workshops describes this part of program correctly, but lectures is not exactly right, even mini-conferences is not exactly true. May be forum:
    image
    What do you think about calling them tech trends forum? Because academia and industry leaders will come to share their views and opinions about tech trends in their area. Teams can ask questions, discuss and adopt these trends in their projects.
    So not to confuse, we can call both boxes and about sections as workshops and tech trends forums.

Latest commit suppose to run on IE8 and newer. Though, I didn't have a lot of time to test it with different devices. Please, test it on your devices (especially, IE or Android phones).
I left lectures in place, because we haven't decided on anything yet.
My opinion is that forum has multiple connotations including a place online to post messages. I used the word lectures because I thought these events will be focused on guest speakers. Maybe, I misunderstood something. You write:

academia and industry leaders will come to share their views and opinions about tech trends in their area

how is it different from a lecture?
Will we have one speaker per event or it will be more of a panel discussion? In the latter case, it's not a lecture of course.

test how title looks
Short Titles and Descriptions for buttons. The titles are action words.
Descriptions are short and concrete.

@felizbear @mari-oh-no please meet @aauri, I asked her help with design and she has already come up with some interesting prelim.

@uncasually

Hello all, here's the original prelim and also a mod version just to give you a feel for the concept. Is not a full concept yet, will work on a more complete version this weekend, possibly aided by your feedback on this 😎

Hey Regina,
second one looks better than the first one, in my opinion.
How will it look on mobile though? Will we just crop the background image?
Also, the text is a bit hard to read, so we should possibly make white overlay more opaque.

@kolyaak
Copy link

kolyaak commented Jan 9, 2015

Yeah, I like second one too.

I've been thinking a bit about background may be to have something in the same style and theme but less details.
May be something like

Coupla more examples from the shutterstock collection which Mario shared with us before. @mari-oh-no can we share the full collection with @aauri?

@uncasually

@felizbear once expanded the concept will include the mobile look too, and yes, the thought was cropped fixed image while elements scroll and reveal, for the reg site as well. We can up the opacity on the white overlay to make it easier to read.Will include the look for buttons in next one too.

@uncasually

@kolyaak we can try zooming in on the current image first, and if not we can swap it. The current image is actually of Seoul, figured that played in well, doesn't have to be though.

@heruka-urgyen

I think an image of Seoul makes more sense than any other image.

Hi @aauri. Nice to meet you. Thank you for your help. The drafts look awesome. I don't really have any useful comments to add right now. I need to update the content from the other pages a bit more during the weekend, and then maybe I can give some useful feedback.

Here is the link for more images. I had purchased a Standard License from Shutterstock, so we don't have to worry about rights or whatever as long as we stick to the terms.

Yeah, I like what we have. I was not insisting on anything particular, just alternatives for experiments. But we all don't have much time. So our principle has been to stick to what we have unless there is a strong alternative.
@aauri can you please upload original mockups (photoshop, illustrator whatever format you used...) to a new branch? In this way I may be able to quickly update some text and compile posters when needed.

@uncasually

Alright guys, here are new shots of final site concept. It would be nice using some js to reveal on scroll, let me know what you guys think. Mobile should be easy to imagine a scaled down vertical resize.
If needed, can have mobile shots tomorrow-- 😓 sorry it's been one eventful week.

Note: As far as the image source goes, looking for the right "feel", got the original from a free wallpapers site, then made _many_ stylized changes so under copyright is in theory my artwork now. Worst case scenario the original owner can ask us to take it down, really very unlikely situation.

@aauri thanks for your work.
Some food for thought:
how many UX problems are we solving by hiding the information behind the scroll and hover events?
and how many are we creating?

what are the benefits of this highly interactive behavior?

We plan for first mini-conference in March (not much time left, so may be in last weekend of March -> march,28)

Guys, would you have time for some essential updates in the web-site?
For next week the goal is to publish a description and link to RSVP for the mini-conf.

If you have time (what's your availability?), I would like to ask to check about following

  • @mari-oh-no please, check what quick (essential) updates do you want to do in the existing description https://github.com/SeoulTech/stream/tree/gh-pages-content-edit
  • @felizbear can we apply the theme from @aauri? In the easiest, static way. In boxes, titles can link to pages but also we should add a RSVP button for the "step up" (mini-conf) box.
  • @kolyaak I will start preparing description for the conference's agenda. possibly, it will be in a table format. @felizbear should I write it in a special way or just prepare in markdown?

@heruka-urgyen
Copy link
Member

@kolyaak
2. feel free to modify <a href=""> under "step up" to add a link for the mini-conferences. afterwards, you are welcome to merge this PR with gh-pages.

  1. unfortunately, I don't have time right now to implement advanced styling. so I'm afraid that a black text on a white background is what we're going to have

regarding the conference agenda, where and how do you want to publish it?

@kolyaak
Copy link
Member Author

kolyaak commented Mar 10, 2015

thank you.

Regarding the agenda, I think to add it in the "step up" page http://seoultech.github.io/stream/lectures.html
Later when we have time and more conferences coming, we can think how/whether to keep them on one page or make a different page for each one.
But first one should be simple.

You can use markdown, or plain HTML, it's up to you

Hello all~ Sorry to all of you for my absence this past 3 weeks. Moving has been super hectic.
Following on the thread regarding the site theme, if you guys want, since @felizbear does not have time, I can apply it. It can just be static and simple for now, just as it looks, we can further discuss any other stylistic elements later. Let me know 😄

It would be great.

Also, tomorrow (March, 20 7:30pm KST) we will have a Stream workshop about
design. Do you want to join through hangouts (if so let's talk about this
in slack)?

P.S. Hope, you settled well in California.

Hi, @aauri any updates?

We were thinking with Mario that currently Stream needs content most of all so we were thinking to favor CMS at this stage. What do you think, guys?
So we are currently trying squarespace.
And we now also have a domain http://www.streamprogram.co/ (please, note the content is a very first draft)

As priority we are working on covers for mini-conferences to schedule them asap. They are internet infrastructure, digital healthcare, online-education, robotics, energy and final two days tech festival.
@aauri, if you have time and ideas to help design them let discuss it.

Squarespace is a very good choice as long as you're okay with paying their rates.

Wordpress hosting plus themes was more expensive, and we really need CMS so I thought  $10/month is actually cheaper than building up stuff from scratch.

Right.

I think it's the best choice right now.

Hi guys,
Agreed that because content is key at the moment, CMS is a great solution. Could definitely design a WP theme from scratch so we wouldn't have to pay for it, however if hosting is cheaper with squarespace or you guys are okay with the fees then that is fine. I can def help with the design this way as well. If you guys wanna send me the login info and what not I can get onto customizing the layout to our stream chosen colors and ideas. Apologies for the delayed response, got a job and just finished the training program last week so I should have some more time starting this week. Thank you all for your patience!

As far as discussing ideas...maybe we could make a separate team/discussion space for the site on Slack?

@mari-oh-no

Actually, the seconfd reason to do sqspace is because wordpress scrolling stutters more on retina displays :p
