MDSplus and the MDSip software tools developed for performance tests, are distributed under open source license. The MDSplus framework and the MDSip-tests software tools come in separate repositories so they can be installed separately, and there is no need to reinstall MDSplus if already present. The build and install of both will be explained step by step in the following chapters. In addition a fully automated build of the latest development version of MDSplus can be triggered from the tests itself with the procedure presented in the chapter “Build everything in one shot”.

Matching the largest number of the network connected servers that hold MDSplus experimental data in the fusion community, we decided to target the MDSip tools for GNU-Linux. This guide will focus on how to install MDSip tests tools and how properly conduct performance test for such specific environment.

The MDSip-tests tools permit essentially a point to point data transfer throughput measurement, thus a single end-to-end sender and receiver setup is involved. We will refer to the client as the program that sends data and the server as the related counterpart holding listening connections.
