-mdoc is a troff macro set that provides semantic markup rather than presentational formatting. Manpages written with these macros are searchable with tools like mandoc and produce higher‐quality output when automatically converted to other formats (like HTML in web manpage viewers).

This is a drop‐in replacement for the old manual, and works with the manpage formatters used by all systems that I know of (groff and mandoc on Linux, BSD, macOS, and Minix).
