Growthcraft Rice: Cultivation and Brewing Guide

Dependencies

  • Growthcraft Core
  • Growthcraft Cellar

Preparation

Before delving into rice cultivation and sake brewing, obtaining a good supply of the following resources is recommended:

-Netherrack
-Iron
-Wood (any)
-Glass
-Mushrooms (brown or red)
-Nether Wart
-Glowstone
-Redstone
-Rice

Rice Cultivation

Rice has been added to the grass loot table and the drop occurrence is affected by the number of items in the loot table. If you want a more reliable method of getting your first Rice, craft a cultivator and start making your Rice Paddies. By default there is a 10% chance that Rice will be discovered when using the cultivator to create a Rice Paddy. The drop percentage and the loot table can be configured via the CONFIG_DIR/growthcraft/growthcraft-rice.cfg file. Using the configuration file you can easily add additional items to the cultivator loot table.

A cultivator is traditionally used to cultivate or "till" the ground to make it more suitable for farming. Crafting a cultivator requires two sticks and five iron nuggets.

In order to grow rice, rice must be planted on a Rice Paddy that has been flooded with water. The rice paddy will automatically flood with water as long as it is within 4 blocks of a water source block. When flooded the rice paddy will visually change and you will be able to see that it has a layer water (F3 Debug, moisture = true/false). Additionally, it must have a light level greater than or equal to 9 and there is a 25% chance that the rice will progress to the next stage. You can change the chance of growth via the configuration file.

Stage Level
Sprouting 0
Sprout 1
Sapling 2
Flowering 3
Mature 4

Building a Rice Paddy requires the Cultivator tool. With the Cultivator tool, right-click on grass or dirt to change it to farmland, then right-click it again to change it to a Rice Paddy. The Rice Paddy will appear flooded when close enough to a water source block.

While holding Rice, right-click on a Rice Paddy to plant a crop. Rice will grow over time, and can be broken by hand or with other tools when mature. Rice does not drop seeds, and can be either be cooked or replanted but not eaten raw.

If you would like to increase your rate of growth, try placing a Yellorium within four blocks of your rice paddy. This will make your rice paddies radioactive and increase the rate of production. Based on testing, there has been no proven evidence that this affects the quality of your rice.

Rice Cooking

-Craft a Brewing Kettle and a Brewing Kettle Lid as per the Recipe Book. (If these don't appear in your Recipe Book: https://ftb.gamepedia.com/Brew_Kettle, lid recipe is one iron nugget centered over three iron ingots.)
-Rice must be cooked in a Brewing Kettle covered by a Brewing Kettle Lid and warmed from below by a heat source, such as fire or lava. Netherrack ignited by a flint and steel is the recommended method of heating a Brewing Kettle.
-Fill a Brewing Kettle with water by right-clicking on it with a water bucket. Right-click on the Brewing Kettle to open the interface, then add Rice to the central input slot and the Brewing Kettle Lid to the upper-lefthand slot. The Rice will begin cooking when the arrow progress indicator begins filling up. -Cooked Rice can be removed from the upper-righthand output slot and eaten to restore 1 hunger, or crafted into Onigiri per the Recipe Book (If this doesn't appear in your Recipe Book: a 2x2 square of Cooked Rice) which restores 2.5 hunger.

Basic Sake Brewing

-Craft a Fermentation Barrel as per the Recipe Book. (If this doesn't appear in your Recipe Book: https://ftb.gamepedia.com/Fermentation_Barrel) -The first step in brewing Sake is to create Sake Mash in a heated Brewing Kettle using Mushrooms. -Fill a Brewing Kettle with Rice Water by right-clicking on it with a Rice Water Bucket. Alternately, after cooking Rice use the 'Switch Tanks' button to move the Rice Water from the rightmost tank to the leftmost tank of the Brewing Kettle. -Remove the Brewing Kettle Lid and add Mushrooms (brown or red both work) to the central input slot. The Sake Mash will begin cooking when the arrow progress indicator begins filling up. One bucket of Sake Mash requires one bucket of Rice Water and 4 Mushrooms to cook. -Once cooked, remove the Sake Mash from the Brewing Kettle with a bucket and transfer it to the Fermentation Barrel, right-clicking on it to add liquid. The Fermentation Barrel can hold up to three buckets of liquid. -Add Nether Wart to the input slot of the Fermentation Barrel. Fermentation will begin when the bubbles icon begins animating and the arrow progress indicator begins slowly filling up. This process can take quite a while, so plan accordingly. -When fermentation is complete, the Nether Wart will be consumed and the Fermentation Barrel will be filled with Sake Fermented liquid. A Glass Bottle can be filled with 250 units of Sake Fermented directly from the Fermentation Barrel. Hold right-click to consume the Sake Fermented. Kanpai!

Advanced Sake Brewing

Fermented Sake can be left in the Fermentation Barrel and additional ingredients added to the input slot to improve the quality and duration of the Resistance buff gained upon consumption. Each additional ingredient repeats the lengthy fermentation process, so plan accordingly. Please see below for the list of possible combinations:

Input Additive Result Modifier
Sake Fermented Redstone Sake Extended Tipsy 5% (90 secs), Resistance (3 min)
Sake Extended Redstone Sake Hyper-Extended Tipsy 5% (90 secs), Resistance (8 min)
Sake Fermented Glowstone Sake Potent Tipsy 10% (90 secs), Resistance (1 min)
Sake Potent Redstone Sake Potent Extended Tipsy 10% (90 secs), Resistance (3 min)
Sake Potent Extended Redstone Sake Potent Hyper-Extended Tipsy 10% (90 secs), Resistance (8 min)
