Preface

My steam name is gas, as is my nickname on the Undertow discord. I have over 1500 hours on Barotrauma and extensive submarine building experience. Alongside others I've learned to replicate the vanilla style of Barotrauma submarines, and am making this PR only because I believe that my design is practically identical in design to other vanilla submarines.

Reasoning

The Remora is an unpopular ship with a low pickrate, aside from a few enthusiasts. The reasons for this are well known - a confusing layout, jank (especially involving bots and the shuttle), ugly design (in certain areas), no batteries aboard the main sub, large blindspots and a general inability to measure up to its competitors relegates the Remora to eccentric crews.

It's Anno Domini 2024, and it's time to go BOLD. This ship is in a worse state than the Berilia of old, and this just won't do - why does such a classic ship have to be relegated to backline status? My rework is brash and bold, a true departure from the Remora of old, but retains the signature touch of the original. The Reworkmora is new, sleek and cool - a perfect addition to shake up the tired tier 3 meta.

Main features of my rework

Improved design
The new Remora's exterior and interior are thoroughly redesigned, with more curves, a sleeker look and an improved layout. This puts it on par with the likes of the Berilia, Typhon 2 or other, newer tier 3 ships.

Improved performance
While the new Remora definitely isn't a "meta" ship, it does sport many niceties that allow it to operate better than its old version. From a new battery bank aboard the main ship to the moving of the large hardpoint to better drainage, the new Remora is better suited for the task at hand, at least relative to its old self.

Allowances for rewiring
From using the bilge as an extra ballast to the bottom periscope being near the depth charge tube the new Remora is built with creative engineers in mind, further improving the gameplay experience.

New shuttle
The new Remora shuttle is purpose-built with the ability to haul divers. We've seen it in the uncharted depths trailer (picrel), now it's time to make it practical.

The new Remora shuttle can not only haul divers but also provide them with much needed fire support, due to a minor reduction in size. Also, the range of the wifi components aboard is a whopping 80000, enabling it to operate far away from the mothership.

Various tech specs

Wi-fi channels used: 601, 602, 701, 702, 801, 901 (as per the vanilla drone controls)
Wi-fi range: 80000
NBL: 0.4192
Drone NBL: 0.4658
Battery relays: non-detachable, charging relay handles 1500kW while the discharging relay handles 3000kW
Power consumption: sustainable without auxiliary engine on, unsustainable without - encourages either reactor upgrades or battery use
Bottom large bilge pump speed: 300 (half of default speed)
Oxygen generator output: 1200 (same as old remora)
EDC specs:

Issue
The drone is built in such a way that 3 walls have to be made indestructible to allow for full bot repairability. While this doesn't affect the drone's ability to be sunk, it does look somewhat silly after a nuclear explosion. I'm leaving this up to you - do you make them breakable and accept that the bots can't fix everything, or make it indestructible, or remake the drone?

###Why accept this rework
The submarine looks like something you would make, it is functional and tested, balanced for the area of progression it is in and the current version desperately needs a rework. Someone has done it for free for you already. Why not just take it and possibly change whatever you hate?

Just to add onto this: the new Remora's top speed is as follows, with the aux engine on
image
Given that this is about as fast as the Winterhalter, maybe a slight buff to like 27-28 would be nice

just a comparison of the kastrull and remora drone

After a lot of feedback, the second revision is here - this ironed out all the flaws me and the Undertow discord were able to identify:
Full changelog:
-Drone is now a pilotable, weaponless shuttle. A self sufficient diving/mining/beacon/whatever team was always the intended goal and let's face it - drone fire support in caves is not that great and best left to the kastrull anyway.
-The bottom of the sub now sports a double coilgun. Gunnery changed to reflect this.
-Bottom bilge pump now up to 400 pump speed, not 300. With how many rooms it drains I found this adequate.
-Added missing water detectors to the docking room and the new stowage compartment (huge issue with the previous version, don't know how that got past testing)
-Turned the drone control room into a stowage compartment
-Drone batteries decreased to 2 from 3. Capacity changed to 4000 kWmin to reflect this. Also added an oxygen tank shelf to the drone.
-Added a door between medbay and reactor room, after a sobering realisation that people will just cut down the wall there.

This is in line with recommendations from others. If requested I can make minor fixes to the previous version and you can go with that instead.
