Instructor course schedule
This is a sample schedule for the ACLS Instructor Course as taught by EM London
0800: Introduction and welcome - A senior instructor or the medical director will welcome participants and give an overview of the vision and plan for London / southwestern Ontario (Tarek)
0815: Overview of Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation's rules, program and website - This will involve an overview of what it's like to collaborate with CHSF, criteria for maintaining status, etc. (Dave)
0830: 7 teaching challenges breakout and report back
- Mixed groups (clinical fellow/new nurse)
- Struggling student
- Disruptive know-it-all
- Anxiety affecting performance
- Is the pass the same for everyone
- Is it enough to know "just the guidelines" as a teacher
- Teaching experts
This section requires flip charts and markers for each group. This is a breakout session with X learners per instructor. The instructor will begin with a 20 minute talk on how to give effective instruction.
Groups will then use this learning to present on the fly for 5 minutes on each topic or on ACLS-related topics. After each presentation, presenting learners will be constructively critiqued by the instructor and other learners to help improve their presentations (10 minutes). This should work as an icebreaker and cover teaching styles and topics.
1100: Approach to examination - A discussion of pass-fail criteria, how to run effective examinations and retests, and a discussion of the precourse evaluation (Tarek)
1115: Setup and takedown of stations station - Necessary equipment and how to setup and takedown. Equipment includes flip charts/I pads/EKGs (Mike)
1130: Improving group engagement - A discussion of how to set the right tone and mood with the group and how to engage learners. This section will include a mock station in which teaching technique is demonstrated and critiqued (Christine)
1145: Lunch
1215: In-depth review of four stations - Review of the following stations, each for 30 minutes:
- Ventricular fibrillation and tachycardia (VF/VT) (Tarek)
- Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA) (Peddle)
- Tachycardia (Christine)
- Bradycardia (Dave)
The purpose of these sessions is to ensure standardized delivery of content to all providers. Each station will consist of a review of content and objectives
1415 Mega Codes WHAT DO WE PUT IN A MEGACODE – DAVE (SEE HEART AND STROKE PROPAGANDA)
1415 Practice teaching – This session will consist of rotating through 2-4 stations. Learners will role-play instructors and other learners. This could be any of the above stations or a megacode.
1600 Wrap-up - A discussion of how to organize and setup courses, a review of the plan for Southwestern Ontario, and a forum for questions and concerns.
