Problem Statement:

Project overview:

In the ever-expanding digital landscape of the entertainment industry, the relevance of recommender systems has become pivotal for ensuring individuals receive tailored content recommendations. Future Forge Software, a visionary company in the entertainment domain, aspires to develop a cutting-edge movie recommender system leveraging advanced analytics and predictive modeling. The challenge at hand involves constructing an algorithm, rooted in content or collaborative filtering, capable of accurately predicting user movie ratings for titles they have not yet viewed, based on their historical preferences.

Project objective:

WatchWiz: Your Ultimate Movie Recommender App!

WatchWiz Logo

The primary objective is to develop a functional recommender system that excels in predicting user preferences for unseen movies. The system should leverage either content-based filtering or collaborative filtering approach to achieve accurate predictions. By analyzing user historical data, including viewing habits, ratings, and interactions, the recommender system should provide valuable insights into individual preferences, ultimately enhancing user satisfaction and engagement.

Data:

This dataset consists of several million 5-star ratings obtained from users of the online MovieLens movie recommendation service. The MovieLens dataset has long been used by industry and academic researchers to improve the performance of explicitly-based recommender systems, and now you get to as well!

The data for the MovieLens dataset is maintained by the GroupLens research group in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Additional movie content data was legally scraped from IMDB.

  • genome_scores.csv: a score mapping the strength between movies and tag-related properties. Read more here
  • genome_tags.csv: user assigned tags for genome-related scores
  • imdb_data.csv: Additional movie metadata scraped from IMDB using the links.csv file.
  • links.csv: File providing a mapping between a MovieLens ID and associated IMDB and TMDB IDs.
  • sample_submission.csv: Sample of the submission format for the hackathon.
  • tags.csv: User assigned for the movies within the dataset.
  • test.csv: The test split of the dataset. Contains user and movie IDs with no rating data.
  • train.csv: The training split of the dataset. Contains user and movie IDs with associated rating data.

Two-Fold Approach:

1. Content-based model:

WatchWiz employs content-based filtering by analyzing user-generated tags, genres, and preferences along with movie attributes. This approach involves weighting features, calculating scores, and generating personalized recommendations based on comprehensive user and content profiles. The integration of user-generated tags ensures a more nuanced and engaging recommendation process, enhancing the app's ability to provide tailored content suggestions.

Content

2. Collaborative-based model:

WatchWiz utilizes collaborative filtering, incorporating both user-based and item-based approaches. By analyzing user behavior and preferences, the app recommends content based on similarities with other users or items that share characteristics with those the user has enjoyed. This dual collaborative filtering strategy enhances the accuracy and diversity of personalized recommendations, providing users with a dynamic and engaging content discovery experience.
