If you have a bunch of graphics - especially icons - they often consist of paths and shapes (ie. compound paths).
Paths can have colours applied, as can shapes. The children of the shapes don't have any appearance though.
So if I select a path or shape with a colour and then Select Similar > In Page > Fill Colour it will select all the paths and shapes, but also select the children of the shapes and therefore the UI on the right doesn't show the colour part, which defeats the purpose of selecting by fill colour.
In the case of Shapes it needs to select the Shape itself, but exclude the children of the Shape.

Update: it only happens to those shapes where the contents are shown in the Layers browser on the left. Normally they don't get selected already. Unfortunately even having just one open and selected means you can't see the appearance section in the right sidebar.
