Basing off older vesions

I think one of the primary problems is when people try to create a clone like Supermium or My pal is they base it off the older versions of chrome and firefox and not the latest one cause the older one are much easier the problem is if the older one versions are not working right on the internet then how is basing on that older version really going to work any better...
