Cannot transfer file bigger than 4 GB

So I’m trying to transfer a file to an external drive with the console. The file I’m trying to transfer being 13.5 GB in size and for some reason, the console cuts off connection or causes a failure when exactly 4 GB is transferred. Is there a way to fix this or is it just something to do with the consoles’s hardware? Wii U (32 GB, black) and 120 GB HDD if you want the specs.

Which filesystem does the drive have? Are you sure it's supporting files >4GiB ( e.g. fat32 doesn't)
