Brainstorming about the concept of creating local rules that influence the way a given city's routes are represented. For example, general complexity and type of street grid could influence a diagrammatic grid on which route lines are drawn.
Potential local rules:
stop / station hierarchy
primary routes hierarchy, also typology of service
urban density scaling... Grid adapts to more dense parts of the city
key service directions (ie in and out of urban core, circulating city...)
