http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/x-atom10/ contains some information on using Atom for podcasting, with alternative media types.
Would need a real-world example, though. Probably not worth the effort.

Basically, yes. Shouldn't be such a big deal, but atom feeds never really became that popular, so I still don't know if it's worth the effort.
