We decided to stick to this diagram size as we felt that it was still readable. Making it any larger would have resulted in us having to split the diagram up which we felt would not be ideal for the readers.

Reason for disagreement: I don't really understand your reasoning that you may have to split the diagram up, since there is enough whitespace to further expand the diagram without compromising the formatting (shown below). Additionally, you have sequence diagrams elsewhere in the document which are also expanded to use the full width of the page, so I don't see why this one is smaller compared to the others.
