unicode throughout the code to represent words

The code currently mixes string and unicode depending on the model format. Should we standardize on unicode?

This would mean having to pass encoding through the chain of functions loading the binary format. It would also mean defining output encoding and making sure that every print uses it not to get terminal-dependent ASCIIDecode errors.
