Are you tired of labor-intensive and time-consuming methods to quantify forest structure and estimate biomass for carbon monitoring? Traditional methods like measuring each tree's diameter and location can be hazardous and limited in scope, despite great effort. Fortunately, mapping technologies like SLAM-based LIDAR and photogrammetry have made capturing highly-detailed 3D point clouds of forests faster and easier than ever before. However, extracting meaningful insights from these complex point clouds remains challenging. That's why I created the Forest Structural Complexity Tool (FSCT) during my PhD, an open-source project that bridges the gap between capturing a beautiful point cloud and obtaining useful forest measurements. FSCT automatically extracts insights from complex forest point clouds, making LIDAR and photogrammetry powerful and accessible tools for forest monitoring.
Currently a hobby project, I continue to maintain and improve FSCT voluntarily, in the hope that it can be useful for forest monitoring, conservation, and research efforts.
