Побуду ретранслятором: есть мнение, что звук в q2pro хуже чем в r1q2.

Я:

...поудалять старьё r1q2 и юзать нормальный клиент q2pro

Давно бы перешел с r1q2, на q2pro, но на последнем звук хромает, только на r1q2 лучшее позиционирование трехмерного звука (естественно речь про OpenAl). Единственный косяк лифты слышно по всей карте, в остальном имхо звук в r1q2 более правильный.

Я:

Я не сварщик, но за позиционирование звука как я понимаю движок q2 не отвечает. OpenAl - сторонняя либа и работать должна одинаково хоть с r1q2, хоть с чёртом лысым. Не плацебо ли мы тут обсуждаем? )

звуковая картина на q2pro неправильная, в r1q2 она более правильная и точная, за исключением одного бага с лифтами. Я более 10 лет играю под r1q2 и сразу чувствую разницу в звуке, на q2pro он не информативный и даже дезориентирующий.

The elevator sound bug is a pretty old legacy one, I don't know if Q2PRO does it properly either but I think it's done better.

Sound is extremely subjective so it's hard to know what this person prefers or why. Q2 is indeed responsible for positioning the sounds, OpenAL just "renders" the sounds out as described by the data sent to it.

In OpenAL mode, Q2PRO uses linear distance sound attenuation model, whereas R1Q2 uses inverse distance AFAIK. Thus it is expected that the sound can be quite different between two.

Linear distance model and its parameters were chosen to be as close to original Q2 sound model as possible (unless there are bugs somewhere). I don't think this should change because sound is important aspect of the game.

One other thing to note is that Creative's default AL driver is terrible. To get a near-perfect match with vanilla Q2 sounds, use openal-soft.

About drivers for what specific sound cards speech? Do not interfere with everything in one pile. Modern cards with what was before, during the time when the hardware sound was at the peak.
In modern sound cards use emulation with simple algorithms that give bad result (worse than in Openal-Soft).

However, Openal-Soft is also a software imitation that is inferior to Creative solutions with sound hardware processing. In Creative X-Fi, the sound scene is processed by a separate special processor (digital signal processor). Processing is carried out with greater accuracy and smaller delays than OpenAl-Soft.

As a Quake 2 player with experience more than 20 years, continuing to play Multiplayer, I am not interested in outdated vanilla sound. He is technically outdated! I am interested in a detailed sound with a natural three-dimensional scene.

I use the best possible solutions for games using sound hardware processing - Creative SB X-Fi Titanium HD. I also have a modern Sound Blasterx G6 card. I have experience and there is an opportunity to compare.
