Your journey starts no knowledge of the alchemical properties of materials. You start experimenting with crushing charcoal and cobblestone together. The resulting dust appears to have magical properties. You combine the dust with a stick to form your first magical tool the Divining Rod.
These dusts, aside from their usefulness in the crafting of other alchemical devices, also seem to restore worn tools or armor to their former state. The amount of dust needed to repair the tool of armor varies anywhere from 1 to 7 depending on the type of tool, while the power of dust required roughly corresponds with the base power of the tool material. The precise details are left to the individual alchemist to discover.
