What is Bumper Ball?

Bumper Ball is a revolutionary game that takes augmented reality to the next level by introducing a new way of integrating the digital and physical worlds: a virtual soccer field, a ball, and other objects, are projected as images on to a real-world game board. You use remote-control-activated toy cars to move the virtual ball around the board and score goals. A camera is used to distinguish between the cars, based on their colors, and identify the cars' position and movement, including direction and velocity. The game reacts to the changes in the physical world and changes the virtual game board accordingly, in real time.

Why Play Bumper Ball?

Because it's great fun for everyone!

✓  Enjoy pure wholesome fun with the entire family
✓  Save money on a babysitter while you get things done
✓  Get your daily dose of exercise from the comfort of your own home
✓  Alleviate stress and bond with colleagues at the office
✓  Play drunken Bumper Ball with legal-age friends (just don't drink and drive!)

How to Play

Two players battle it out on the virtual soccer field. Each player uses a remote control to drive a toy car across the game board. The objective is to use your car to hit the virtual game ball into your opponent's goal and score goals, while preventing your opponent from scoring goals. On the way, avoid the obstacles that appear on the board and pick up power-up gifts that provide you with advantages over your opponent (such as making their goal larger). The winner is the player who scores the most goals within the allocated time.

How to Setup the Game

Components

Bumper Ball includes the following components:

  • The Bumper Ball software binary ("Bumper Ball") — for example, BumperBall.exe on Windows.

  • A digital USB camera ("the camera").

  • A USB cable.

  • Two cardboard cut-outs ("the game board").

  • Two remote-control (RC) cars ("the cars") with their remote controls (batteries not included).

In addition, you will need a computer that runs the game, and projector with a connection to your computer.

Installation

Follow these steps to install Bumper Ball:

  1. Install Bumper Ball on your computer: simply double-click the software binary and follow the instructions.

  2. Lay out the cardboard cutouts (the game board) on a flat surface, such as your living-room floor or carpet.

  3. Fix the camera to an elevated surface and aim it at the board.

  4. Connect the computer to the camera using the USB cable.

  5. Connect the computer to a projector and project the virtual game image on to the game board.
