I'm part of a team using this for a trade server, and it was recently brought to my teams attention that users in the Discord server could theoretically impersonate staff or large traders by simply changing their Nickname in the server.
By switching to a system that uses exclusively Usernames, it can help prevent impersonation attempts. Right now all it would take to impersonate an admin is to make your discord in-server nickname the same as one of the admins. Anyone in the TF2 server wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an actual admin and a fake admin without checking the discord, basically defeating the whole point of discord chat integration in the first place. With a change to Usernames only, they could get as close as they want but they would never be able to have the exact same username as an admin. This means anyone whose familiar with staff members username would be able to immediately tell an impersonator from the real deal.
As for other solutions, our community has also considered doing some sort of verification step, allowing important people like Staff and Devs to have some sort of tag or special text color to help verify their identity. This is still an option but I'm of the mind that the simpler solution is the better one, and this seems like the simpler solution. This is also a problem that could be minimized by disabling Nicknames in the server entirely (not fun for users), or through heavy usage of staff members monitoring nickname changes and global chat (means staff needs to put in more work than usual).
I think at least even having it as an option would make staff lives easier.
