When gplots was temporarily removed on CRAN (in 2020?) we moved a lot of things forward: created a dedicated r-gregmisc/gplots repository, implemented some new features, and we used the opportunity to comb through the code and documentation to correct typos, simplify, modernize, and apply a consistent style.
As far as I remember, we were getting close to submitting to CRAN, when we realized that Tal had created his own repository and submitted to CRAN. It was good to have the package up and running on CRAN at that point, and I think Greg already contacted him to talk about maintenance plans for gplots.
I also seem to remember that Greg was reviewing my suggestions and asked for my input on a couple of changes that needed clarification. Maybe that's where the development halted, and I plead guilty for dropping the ball...
Anyways, I'll stop here and let others chime in :)

Hi!
I'm curious to know whether the plan is for Tal to maintain the gplots package, and whether we plan to combine development from https://github.com/talgalili/gplots and https://github.com/r-gregmisc/gplots.
