This is an idea about usability.
This happened to me twice lately.

Using the Authenticator with a 30 second TOTP token I am logging in to a service. The login gets rejected.

What actually happened:
I started reading the OTP value. I started typing the OTP value.
I continued reading the OTP value and I continued typing the OTP value.

What I was not aware of is, that the OTP value had changed in the meantime.
So I typed the first 3 digites from the previous OTP value and the last 3 digits from the new OTP value.

The hour glass that shows the changing of the OTP value was not that obvious to me, I did not see it, since I was looking at the OTP value. The OTP value changed "suddenly", while I was typing the first part.

For my personal convenience it might be usefull, if something happened with the OTP value itself. Change color? Flashing?

  • The value itself turns orange 10 secs before end and red 3 secs before end and turns green/blue again when it is new.
  • The value starts flashing 5 secs before end...
  • Whatever.

So when I look at the OTP value the second time, I would actually realize, that this is a new value (since it turned from red to green again. Or it stopped flashing, the appearance of the value itself has changed.)
