Adam suggested changing to a steering behavior, instead of a pathfinding behavior. Especially if you used a weightmap to figure out where the agents should move to, you could perform all sorts of transformations on the weightmap to create smart behavior (weight where the animal has been, weight based on the terrain, weight based on proximity to animal, weight based on smell/lures).
