As a followup to #92, OpenTrailMap could offer an option to go beyond labeling features in the user’s preferred language and also label indigenous names, which are often relevant to contextual awareness in outdoor spaces. That would be more difficult than the local-language glosses in OSM Americana, since the tiles and underlying data don’t indicate where specific indigenous languages or language families were traditionally spoken. Native-Land.ca maintains language distribution data and offers an API and tileset for this data, which is CC0-licensed. MapLibre comes with some very limited functionality for joining vector tile features to GeoJSON features, but with the sheer number of languages we’d be working with, we’d probably need to do the joining on the server side.
