Hacktoberfest is coming up soon (October 1-31) and we are so excited to showcase the Camunda Community Hub this year, our third year participating!
We are so proud of the projects everyone has worked on in the 161 repos we have in the Camunda Community Hub so far, and are excited to highlight them to the wider open source community.
Below is more information about Hacktoberfest, how to participate, and how to opt out.
What is Hacktoberfest?
Hacktoberfest is an annual celebration of open source, created by DigitalOcean. "This is all about encouraging meaningful contributions to the open source ecosystem — for beginners and veterans alike."
The Hacktoberfest project aims to get new contributors interested in contributing to OSS. By submitting four valid, quality PRs to a project during the month of October, contributors are eligible to get a limited-edition t-shirt and swag pack provided by DigitalOcean and this year’s sponsors.
Hacktoberfest is opt-in – that means only repos with the hacktoberfest label and PRs with the hacktoberfest-accepted label are eligible to receive prizes. This has reduced the number of low-quality, spammy PRs from previous years.
If you do not want to participate, please ensure that none of your repos have the hacktoberfest label on them.
Why should I participate in Hacktoberfest?
For maintainers, Hacktoberfest is a great way to share your project with the wider open source community and encourage contributions, especially from folks who are new to open source. Last year, we had 66 valid Hacktoberfest contributions between participating Camunda repos!
For contributors, Hacktoberfest is a way to celebrate open source software with the community, and an entry point for those new to contributing. Plus, you can get swag for participating!
For every Camunda challenge completion, we will make a donation to One Tree Planted, which plants trees across the globe focusing on areas in need of habitat rehabilitation. If you complete the challenge you will also have the option of choosing to receive the limited edition Camunda x Hacktoberfest 2022 t-shirt. Maintainers of Camunda Community Hub repositories are also eligible for a t-shirt for their participation. For more information on Camunda’s challenge, visit the Hacktoberfest 2022 landing page.
Advice and resources for maintainers
If October is Hacktoberfest, that means September is Preptember! Taking the time to prepare your repos, issues, and PRs makes it easier for newcomers to independently contribute to your project.
If you are participating in Hacktoberfest 2022 with your community extension’s repository, we highly encourage you to make use of the following labels on issues and pull requests:
Add the hacktoberfest topic to your repository during the month of October if you would like to participate in Hacktoberfest with your project in the Camunda Community Hub.
Spam reduction is at the forefront of Hacktoberfest, and should be a goal for contributors and maintainers alike. DigitalOcean has more details on how to reduce spam during Hacktoberfest, and how we can work together to ensure quality pull requests are submitted to the Camunda Community Hub during Hacktoberfest.
Working with Probot
In the Camunda Community Hub, we have an automated PR/Issue label tool known as Probot that can help maintainers and contributors tag their contributions quickly and easily. To get started, review our documentation on issue labeling with Probot.
PR response templates
We developed some optional templates you can use to reply to pull requests. We strongly recommend making use of the saved replies feature on GitHub to save time.

PR not accepted:
Thank you so much for taking the time to open this PR! Sadly, I'm afraid it doesn’t meet our guidelines for contributing to the project. Hacktoberfest is an extremely busy time for open-source project maintainers, and unfortunately, we are going to have to close this pull request. Please have a look at our contributor guidelines in the README.
Possible reasons why your PR was closed:
If you would like to make another pull request to this project during Hacktoberfest 2022, we’d love to review it. Thank you again for your participation!
