Produce a list of mailing lists which can be retired #975
Comments
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-za has been retired. Replaced by https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/za/57 |
Looks like imports-us can go (there's 3 messages this year, with 2 of them being about moving/moved to community). It wasn't ever really a policy channel anyway (more a relief valve for talk-us, with the discussion on imports proper being the real way to move an import forward). |

@Firefishy The osmcha mailing list can be archived. Thank you! |
Is there a new location? Or just archive it? |
@Firefishy The mailing list was rarely used. We have a channel in the OSM US slack that is quite active now. |
Mailing list activity for the last 24 monthly archives, sorted by replies, then messages, then alphabetically. Because my parsing of email archives is artisanal, the numbers might not be fully accurate, but this gives a good idea of the activity of the lists.

As a start, I would say any lists without any posts in the last two years can be archived. That's an easy way to handle half of them. |
I would even say that any lists with no replies, except maybe announce, can be retired instantly with no loss of discussion. |
talk-at had its last postings in July and a single posting in October. The forum is more active. I think that we can close the list if there will be no substantial posting activity within the next months apart from cross-postings. |
talk-vi – the mailing list for Vietnam(ese), not the U.S. Virgin Islands – has had a few messages lately, but it’s usually only one or two a year, and it’s been like that for over a decade. The mailing list has never been much of a success. I’ve proposed closing down this list and replacing it with a forum subcategory (to complement the much more active Facebook group). |
Moderator of talk-at here. I support archiving this list in favor of the new Community Forum. |
Croatia community supports archiving talk-hr list in favor of the new Community Forum. |
talk-gb-oxoncotswolds@, legal-talk@, and potlatch-dev@ are all lists I nominally administer and they can all be closed. tagging@ should stick around for a few more months. Really the only English-language lists that it seems worth keeping around at this point are tagging@, talk-gb@ and talk-au@. announce@ is probably worth keeping for the principle of the thing. |
I've posted the steps the list admin (or sysadmin) need to perform the archive a list: https://github.com/openstreetmap/operations/wiki/Retiring-a-Mailing-list |
Many of the OpenStreetMap mailing lists can now be retired as the community has moved to other communications channels.
The mailinglist archives will be retained.
Once the list has been produced those mailinglists should be closed to new signups / hidden. If possible there should be an informational message about replacement communication channel if applicable.
